The lifespan of a tag depends on a few things...
Activity level - the more active the pet, the more wear and tear the tag will get. If your pet is constantly running through rough terrain or swimming in salt water, it will wear down the tag.
Other tags on the same collar - When multiple tags are attached to the same collar, they will bump and rub against each other, causing wear.
Other pets - if you have other pets in the household or other pets that frequently socialise with yours, rough play can sometimes involve biting and grabbing around the collar area and the tag may get abused.
Material - we offer tags in a variety of materials.
Stainless steel is by far the hardest metal and the most durable tag we offer. Diamond engraved stainless tags will wear down over time, as the engraving is quite shallow. Rotary tags will have the longest life of any other tag, since they are engraved very deep.
Brass is a harder metal than aluminum so will be more durable in rough environments, although exposed raw brass will corrode over time (we coat our brass tags in a clear lacquer finish to prevent corrosion).
Aluminum is the softest metal and will show wear much faster than any other tag. Since the anodizing (colouring) is only on the surface, it will begin to fade over time.
That being said, a tag could last anywhere from one month to over a year.
